Baroness Shirley Williams of Crosby, the former Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, has praised Liberal Democrats in the East Midlands for fighting for every vote and every seat, despite the tough backdrop of the Coalition Government.
The former Education Secretary was speaking at a special event, for Party members, held at The Belgrave Rooms in Nottingham, on Saturday.
The venue was packed with Lib Dems, from across the region, all eager to hear from one of the Party's iconic figures.
Baroness Williams addressed the crowd on a host of issues, including how Lib Dems are making a positive difference in national Government through policies such as taking the lowest paid workers out of paying income tax altogether, helping children from poorer backgrounds via the Pupil Premium, and re-linking pensions to earnings.
She conceded that the Coalition is also having to do some difficult things to sort out the economy, after the mess left by the previous Labour administration, but said that in the fullness of time Lib Dems will get the credit for taking the tough decisions, in the national interest, to set the country back on the right course.
Tony Rogers, Chairman of the East Midlands Lib Dems, says it was great to hear from Baroness Williams.
"Shirley Williams is one of the most respected and loved politicians in our nation's modern history and it was a real boon to our members in this region to hear from her in person."
"Our members left buoyed by her rallying cry to keep on working and are positive heading into next year's County Council elections."
