Phil KnowlesDelegates attending the Regional Conference identified the HS2 as a key issue at the front of their minds. Some delegates had contacted Regional Policy Officer Phil Knowles expressing delight about HS2, others stated concerns whilst there were those who felt that the scheme as it stands is a good starting point for discussion but needs amendment.

'To try and form a general motion would have been difficult but it was very clear that we had to find space and opportunity for a discussion on HS2 so I was delighted to have the chance to chair an open forum/discussion attended by about 30 delegates. So many good points were raised and I'm very grateful to Lucy for noting these in great detail. This document is available to read here but in the meantime there is a summary which was agreed at the end of the meeting which I hope members will find of interest -

"There is concern that clear justification on the cost/benefits for this investment has not been shown, but the regional economy would be improved by better East Midlands links to Birmingham and the north. There was strong support in principle; people would like the construction to start at this end (towards Birmingham) and then go northwards."

'' I will be forwarding a copy of the information to Norman Baker MP so that he has a flavour of some of the feelings among members here in the East Midlands. I was able to tell delegates informally that I am currently in discussion with Norman's office in the hope that we can arrange to have him at a special HS2 event in the region, possibly in June - more detail to follow''
