Keith FalconbridgeAmber Valley and Derbyshire Liberal Democrats would like to thank all who helped for their commitment and energy during the Codnor & Waingroves by-election. The result was a disappointment for us, although clearly the area was one we hadn't worked for many years. It showed no real change from other local elections following a national pattern:

Lab 557 (Labour hold)

UKIP 250

Con 219

LD 39

27 % turnout

This certainly doesn't reflect the effort that went into this campaign.

What have we learnt from it ? We did manage to carry out a limited amount of canvassing, and the few positive contacts we have will be keenly followed up in the hope that they could become the seeds of future helpers and members - one lady actually phoned us on polling day to thank us for a piece of casework. This proves the value of canvassing, either on the doorstep or by phone.

The campaign also showed how, when we work together across constituencies and counties, we can pull a lot of people behind a common aim, and understand more about our collective skills, motivations and interests.

Finally, the campaign did raise the profile of key local issues, such as massive threatened housing development and traffic generation, and at least the Conservative Borough Council received this clear message.

Looking forward to the next opportunity to put the Liberal Democrat case to the people.

Thank you again to one and all.
