Action day in Polish community in Northampton

There are 2,500 Polish voters registered in Northamptonshire and thousands who are not registered.

Northampton local party took 'a Euro Election Action' and approached the Polish church for permission to hand out leaflets after the Sunday Mass.

This permission was granted and the task force swung into an action: Brian Markham suggested a leaflet, George translated it into Polish, Michael printed it - and on Sunday Michael Torpy, George Smid and Cllr Brendan Glynane were handing out leaflets for the morning as well as evening masses.

George used his rudimentary Polish to engage with the Poles and the findings are interesting: quite a few Poles do not want to vote in the UK because they wish to vote in local elections in Poland and they have been mislead into believing that once they 'register' in the UK they would not be allowed to vote in Poland.

Others offered help - only time will tell if their offer was sincere, others claimed 'definitely to vote' - so George explained that only the vote for Liberal Democrats counts.

All in all it was worth it, the weather was nice, over 500 hundred leaflets were distributed and initial contact with Polish potential voters was made.

Now the real work starts - to follow it up ….

But signs are encouraging - George has already received an offer of help all be it from a resident of Newcastle upon Tyne.

She writes

"Dear Mike and George,

I was truly delighted to hear that you really care about the best future for people living in the UK and that you took such a huge effort and time to address your ideas and programme also to Polish community in Northampton.

You said that this was incidental meeting that makes a difference - I always used to say that all these incidental meetings are on a purpose. As I have mentioned this morning - I am very happy to help in anything and contribute with my knowledge/experience/skills/observations/some time in order to improve people's life and future in general.

I have just safely arrived home from Northampton (I live in Newcastle upon Tyne) - so I don't have much time left this evening, but I will look into your leaflets tomorrow and will write back with my findings.

It was a great pleasure meeting you today and I am looking forward to any small assignments you may have for me. I work a lot for local Polish community in Newcastle and I hope Polish community in Northampton is quite similar. So I might be able to share with some valuable observations and ways to work with this group.

Again thank you for accepting my offer of help and I hope you will find it useful."

George is now asking for your help if you can - but George is also offering to help with Eastern European communities in your area.
