Bill Newton Dunn in EU ParliamentBill votes the most for the East Midlands

According to, (an independent website, founded by LSE, which tracks MEP's voting records over the past five years), Bill participated in 95.35% of the votes in the plenary and was well ahead of the other current MEPs representing the region. In comparison, Labour's Glennis Willmott had a 91.31% attendance, the Conservatives' Emma McClarkin had 87.62%, while UKIP brought up the rear with Roger Helmer managing 87.53% and Derek Clark having 79.7%. Bill ranked fifth out of all the MEP's in the Parliament.

Bill has the longest experience

He has been representing Lincolnshire and then the East Midlands since the first election to the European Parliament in 1979. He is the longest standing and therefore most experienced MEP in the whole European Parliament, with not one other from anywhere in Europe elected in 1979 standing as a candidate this time. The others were first elected later: Roger Helmer in 1999, Derek Clark in 2004 and Emma McClarkin in 2009, while Glennis Willmott in 2006 (after Philip Whitehead died unexpectedly).

Bill reports regularly each month to his constituents

He sends a regular monthly report by e-mail to over thirteen thousand constituents. Anybody is welcome to send him their address to receive it - and it is also available on his website and the East Midlands Liberal Democrats website. In addition, over the past five years, he has sent out approximately a million written letters via the Royal Mail to people in the East Midlands, informing and reporting about his work in the European Parliament and inviting them to respond to him.

Bill always replies to constituents

Lastly, he strongly believes in two-way communication. He always replies to every single message - no matter whether it's an e-mail, letter or phone call. People of the East Midlands can be sure that they always receive a reply from Bill.

For example, an email which arrived on 24th April said:

"Good luck Bill, I do hope that you are re-elected. I emailed all the East Midlands MEPs on an issue recently and perhaps you will be interested to know that you were the only one to reply. So you know where my vote is going."

Another email received on the same day said:

"Thank you for sending out your regular newsletters. It has enabled me to learn what has been going on at the European Parliament without wading through mounds of paperwork! Your comments on the legislation have been very informative. I hope that you will be successfully re-elected to represent us - you are the only E Midland MEP that I can name and bothers to keep us informed."
