Catherine Bearder elected to top job in European Parliament

July 2, 2014 2:12 PM

South East MEP Catherine Bearder has today been elected to a top job in the European Parliament.

Catherine was voted in as a 'Quaestor' a position that means she will be responsible for helping to manage the day-to-day running of the Parliament.

Catherine has said she will use the position to increase transparency in the European parliament, making more information available to MEPs and to the people they represent.

With a long history of environmental campaigning Catherine will also work towards reducing the parliament's carbon footprint.

Commenting on the election, Catherine Bearder said:

"I'm delighted to have been elected to this role by my peers. I have championed environmental protection for years and have always believed that you have to lead by example. That is what I want the European Parliament to do.

"We also need to improve people's trust in organisations like the European Parliament. This has to begin by improving transparency."
