By-election result - Northampton Borough Council, St James Ward

July 4, 2014 11:11 AM
By Brian Markham - Agent
Northampton Borough Council, St James Ward, 3rd July 2014

Labour 307 (31.7%)

Jill Hope Lib Dem Focus Team 262 (27.1%)

UKIP 201 (20.8%)

Conservative 198 (20.5%)

Turnout 29.9%

Labour held the seat, with no doubt a sympathy vote following the death of sitting councillor and former Mayor Terry Wire..

Jill has worked very hard promoting the Liberal Democrats since she was elected as County Councillor for Sixfields, which includes part of St James, in 2013 and achieved a massive increase in our share of the vote. She was just 46 votes short of victory and I know that she is very appreciative of the support that she has received from Lib Dem colleagues.

The big message from this election was the Tory performance …. They came 4th....their vote halved compared to 2011 (193 vs. 398) a complete rejection in St James of the Borough Council record since 2011
