"Tour de France showed what Leeds can do- time is right to let us decide our own transport future", says MP Mulholland

With the highly successful delivery of the opening stage of the Tour de France, Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland, has said this shows what Leeds can do if allowed to get on and make its own decisions. In the House of Commons today, Mulholland called on government to continue showing its faith in Yorkshire and let people decide the future of their transport system.

Mulholland welcomed the £573 million Growth Deal announced to boost the economy of Leeds City Region, its infrastructure and workforce, saying it "heralded a new era for the Leeds City Region economy".

Speaking yesterday in the House of Commons, following a ministerial statement by the cities minister, Greg Clark MP, Mulholland said:

"During this unforgettable and amazing weekend of Tour de France, Yorkshire showed just what it do through the work of Welcome to Yorkshire, local councils and businesses if allowed to get on. This is a great use of Leeds City Region's ability to make decisions. I hope this now means the region can also make its own decisions on transport, meaning a Leeds-Bradford rail link and something better than the NGT trolleybus scheme."

Speaking afterwards, Mulholland added:

"Ministers have spoken a great deal recently about creating a 'northern powerhouse'. Leeds City Region is already the biggest outside of London in terms of economic output, at £55 billion a year. The Growth Deal is excellent news, a very significant devolution of powers which I hope it will lead to us making our own transport decisions and the things we need, a proper modern integrated transport system for Leeds and the Leeds City Region."
