Greg Mulholland MP tables Parliamentary motion to celebrate the triumph of the Yorkshire Grand Depart

July 9, 2014 10:02 AM

Greg Mulholland MP, Member of Parliament for Leeds North West and Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group Tour de France group, has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament after hailing the Yorkshire Grand Depart of Le Tour de France a triumph that Yorkshire should be very proud of.

The Early Day Motion (EDM) celebrates the success of Le Grand Depart of the 101st Tour de France, which set off on its first stage from Leeds on Saturday.

The motion congratulates Welcome to Yorkshire and its CEO, Gary Verity, for a successful bid for world largest cycle race which Greg supported. It also thanks the race director, Christian Prudhomme, for his faith in Yorkshires bid and all of the volunteers, councils, businesses, pubs, hotels and communities that made the day a huge success.

Over 4 and half million lined the route over the first three days of the Tour, which saw the race pass through three communities in Greg's Leeds North West constituency - Arthington, Pool and Otley.

The EDM also hope that one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world passing through Yorkshire will inspire the next generation of UK cycling stars.

Commenting Greg said:

"I am delighted to be tabling an EDM celebrating the success of Le Grand Depart of the Tour De France in Yorkshire.

"The world largest cycle race coming through Yorkshire was a triumph! It was an unforgettable day and an amazing occasion that Yorkshire should be very proud of.

"The hard work and effort of so many people, including everyone at Welcome to Yorkshire, Leeds City Council, the volunteers, businesses, places of worship and communities, should be recognised by the House.

"I urge as many of my parliamentary colleagues as possible to get behind the motion and show their support for the hugely successful Grand Depart!"
