MP Mulholland backs Otley organ donation campaign

Member of Parliament for Leeds North West, Greg Mulholland, this weekend dropped by a stall organised by the Otley Lions Club and West Yorkshire Kidney Patient Association to give his support to their organ donation campaign.

Earlier this month saw the NHS organise its National Transplant Week, aiming to raise awareness of organ donation and urging people to join the Organ Donation Register. The stall was held at the Buttercross in Otley on Saturday, 19th July, to mark the end of the NHS campaign and was also supported by Otley Lions Club, including the club's mascot Chip, and Otley town crier, Terry Ford.

Commenting afterwards, Mulholland said:

"Across the country, more people urgently need organs than we have available and in fact, on average three people a day die because they needed an organ transplant but could not get one.

"I commend both the Otley Lions Club and the West Yorkshire Kidney Patient Association for the time and effort they are putting into raising awareness of organ donation. There are over 6,000 patients in England on the transplant waiting list and the stall was a great way to raise awareness and encourage Otley residents to help."

Mulholland has long supported raising awareness of organ donation; last year he signed a parliamentary motion calling on the Secretary of State for Education to introduce educational sessions so school pupils understand how they can join the bone marrow register. This April, he also wrote to all local secondary schools encouraging them to invite in the Anthony Nolan charity to talk to pupils about the benefits of joining the blood, marrow and organ registers.

Judy Pears, member of the West Yorkshire Kidney Patient Association and organiser of the Otley stall added:

"Greg's support in our endeavour to promote the importance of people considering the need to sign up for after-life organ donation was very important, because there is a real need for donors and families should not have to face making such tough decisions in a crisis."

Barbara Taylor, President of Otley Lions Club, also added:

"Otley Lions Club is always happy to give support to worthwhile causes such as this event which promoted an increased awareness of organ donation and the benefits it gives to recipients."
