Leon Duveen speaks at autumn conferenceYesterday saw the announcement of the September Unemployment figures. Nationally there was a fall of those defined as Unemployed to under 2 million for the first time in 6 years and a claimant count to 923,240 across the UK.

Here in Bassetlaw, there are 507 less people claiming JSA in Bassetlaw than this time last year, which is a decrease of over 26%. Leon Duveen, Lib Dem PPC for Bassetlaw welcomed the news and said "What is even more pleasing is to see the fall in youth unemployment, down 37.8% to 395 & long term claims (over 12 months) down to over 15% to 465."

Leon added, "Having been unemployed myself in the past and having close family members and friends long-term unemployed, I know as well as anyone the pain caused by being out of work. This reduction in the number unemployed in Bassetlaw is wonderful for those who have got jobs but we must continue to strive to make sure that those still looking for work get the necessary support and help they need to so that we can continue bring these figures down."

He went on to say, "Because of having the Lib Dems in Coalition, the Government has been making sure that the recovery in more evenly spread across the country, unlike in previous recoveries. We must not jeopardise this by electing a party only interested in rewarding its friends in the City or a party with a record of economic mismanagement in next year's General Election. Either would be a disaster for Bassetlaw."
