For those who don't know me, I was born and raised in Birstall and have lived in Charnwood for most of my life.

I'm a husband and a family man. I have a large extended family in Birstall which I am very close too.

I attended Riverside Primary, Stonehill High School and Longslade Community College.

I currently work for Leicester City Council Adult Social Services specialising in Adult Mental Health and Physical Disability and previously worked in the Housing Department of Leicester City Council as a Housing Officer.

I have only been in politics for a short while, having been elected in February 2014 to Charnwood Borough Council representing Birstall-Wanlip Ward following a by-election.

I am currently recovering from a serious spinal injury and learning to walk again. Once I recover I would like to get back to my normal life; playing badminton, going swimming and spoiling my nephews and nieces.

I believe people in public life need to be honest, so am stating now that from time to time you will see spelling and grammar mistakes in my writing as I have dyslexia, but I'm hoping you will judge me on the content of my communications, rather than my spelling.

In my short time on the Borough Council I have achieved the following:

  • Secured 3 new bus shelters

  • Secured Grit Bins

  • Raised awareness of the need for a dog park

  • Campaigned against the over development of Birstall (ongoing)

  • Campaigned for re-opening a local post office (ongoing)

  • Got safety rails installed outside a primary school

  • Campaigned for a new primary school

  • Petitioned for the local swimming pool to be reopened

  • And started Birstall Car Boot Sale - from my hospital bed due to my spinal injury.

As I said I like to be honest so it should be noted I have no previous experience of working in senior politics so it's a great pleasure and honour for me to represent the community of Charnwood in the place I was born and raised. Someone clearly believes I'm doing a good job.

Now I don't want to tell you what you mostly already know about the general election, and what Liberal Democrats stand for, but more about what's missing. I believe an MP's basic duty is to represent their local community in Parliament. I believe that this is missed by a lot of MPs.

What I would like to do as your MP is something completely different. The Liberal Democrats are the only party whose members choose its policies. I would like to pass this power to the community of Charnwood. Excluding main Lib Dem policies I would like the community of Charnwood to say how they would like me to vote in parliament on a number of issues. If elected I will set up a website where you can enter your secure personal number and your postcode with house number, and choose how you want me to vote in parliament. This is something I believe this has never been tested or trialled before with any MP but I see it as giving you the choice and letting the community have their say in parliament, giving more power to the people of Charnwood.

Everything I have done so far has resulted from requests by local residents. I don't want to be an MP who is difficult to get hold of, I don't want to be someone you feel intimidated about approaching. I want to be the MP you can rely on, an MP who is professional in Parliament with respect for its history, but the MP you can sit down and have a cup of tea with, to try and find a way forward and help the community flourish.

I hope you will see that I am not the normal politician, and that I am just a lad from Birstall trying to get by in life. I'm hoping that you will see me as a breath of fresh air and a change to the politics you see today. I'm hoping that you will support me in becoming your next MP for Charnwood so I can represent, you, your family and neighbours and be the best MP I can, by being there for you.
