Lib Dems in Europe push for EU citizens' and expat votes in referendum
Liberal Democrats will this morning debate the EU referendum at their annual autumn conference taking place in Bournemouth.
In the debate, the party's European branch will push to include all EU citizens living in the UK and all British citizens in other EU countries in the franchise for the referendum.
The Brussels & Europe local party will move an amendment which has gained the support of other local parties and members around the UK, calling to give a say in the referendum to:
1) All 16 and 17 year olds
2) All EU citizens resident in the UK
3) All UK citizens resident in other EU countries
If adopted, the motion will then become Liberal Democrat party policy.
Speaking ahead of the debate, Giles Goodall, Chair of Brussels & Europe Liberal Democrats, said:
"This referendum will be of huge significance to the UK, including our fellow EU citizens who call this country their home, and Brits living and working in other EU countries. They will be directly affected by this vote and must have a say too."
