Ed Reynolds was selected unanimously as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Rutland and Melton on 20thJuly. The Liberal Democrats are now ready to fight a general election here. This follows reports that the new Prime Minister might go to the country early, before a possible recession and also to take advantage of Labour in-fighting.

Ed lives and works in the constituency and grew up on a tenant farm in Cold Overton.

Ed says: "I am really proud to have been selected and it would be a huge honour to represent the constituency I was born and raised in.

I am only too well aware that in Rutland and Melton we do have challenges. After 150 years of Tory MPs and 24 years of Alan Duncan, the people of Rutland and Melton want and deserve a change. As such my campaign will aim to rebuild trust with the electorate. We want to dramatically change how politics is done in this country by re-engaging the public in the political process, especially the young. However, my focus will always be on local issues first. I want the best services for those who live here and the best opportunities for those who grow up here".

Post Brexit the country is facing greater uncertainties. The economy is weaker, threatening jobs, public services and our efforts to build the houses Britain so badly needs.

The Liberal Democrats will go into the election as the only party committed to protecting Britain's role at the heart of Europe.

The Liberal Democrats are well placed to fight a general election whenever it is held. Since the referendum we have signed up more than 17,500 new members nationally, including a 37% jump in membership in Rutland and Melton. This means that we now have more members than we've had this century. We have a new army of committed activists who will be joining me on the doorstep, who will fight for change in this constituency and across the country.

The Conservatives have destroyed their reputation for economic competence, with investment plummeting and jobs at risk. Labour has given up even trying to speak to the British people, and is engaged in a vicious fight with itself. We, meanwhile, are selecting the best local candidates to win seats and to take the fight for fairness and opportunity to the Tories.

Only the Liberal Democrats are an open, optimistic and united party committed to spreading opportunity for the next generation and focused on re-building the British economy to protect jobs and services.
