Time to Get Involved!

Anita DayEach time I sit down to write to you, I review the events of the past week and try to select interesting topics to talk about. Recently, this has been a difficult exercise… simply because so much is happening! Whether it's events across the Atlantic, the Trump-May 'love-in', the NHS crisis…. Well, I think you know what I mean!

It's not all bad. The Supreme Court decision that Parliament must debate Article 50, and the widespread condemnation of Donald Trump's actions (although not by our own PM) are welcome, and give us hope that we are not living in a parallel universe where 'alternative facts' & naivety rule. Equally encouraging is the continued movement of disillusioned Tory & Labour supporters to our party. An interesting poll at the weekend suggested that, if Labour continues to support hard Brexit, the Lib Dems could overtake them as the Opposition in reality as well as ideologically.

This increases focus on the by-elections in Copeland, and Stoke-on-Trent on 23 Feb- particularly Stoke-on-Trent where our candidate, Dr Zulfiqar Ali, is trying to stop Paul Nuttall, the UKIP Leader, being elected to Parliament. Indications are that we could win here, but we need your help. Stoke is about 2 hrs away- do you have any free time to help deliver leaflets or help in the office? If not, could you make a donation towards stamps or printing? Please contact if you can.

Closer to home are our County Council elections in May. We will be campaigning to win so we need candidates, active campaigners & helpers. Please get in touch if you would be willing to help. Being a candidate requires no political experience, yet gives voters the opportunity to vote for a Liberal Democrat, and helps build a long-term base.

If you want to know more, please drop in to one of our upcoming Lib Dem Pints. The next one is on Wednesday 22 February at The Royal Oak, 27 High Street, Swayfield, Grantham, NG33 4LL. We would love to see you if you can make it!

Finally, I must finish on another piece of good news. Roger Federer, a man who will always hold a piece of my heart, won the Australian Open at the age of 35. He became the oldest man in 45 years to win a Grand Slam, the man with the most Grand Slam titles, and the first to win 5 titles in 3 Grand Slam events. And this was after he had missed 6 months in 2016 due to injury, and had been written off by some as 'past it'!

There's a moral in that for us, I think. If there was ever a time to get involved in our fightback, it is now!
