Frightening if it turns out that foreign powers are tampering with our democracy - Tim Farron

Commenting on the report which suggests the referendum voter registration website could have been hacked, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, who first drew attention to the problem, said:

"It is thanks to the Lib Dems that the government were alerted to the major failing in their registration software and then bowed to our pressure to extend the deadline.

"Hundreds of thousands of people could have been blocked from their democratic right to vote on the most important decision of our lifetimes.

"It is a frightening state of affairs if it turns out that foreign powers are underhandedly tampering with our democracy. That is why we need an inquiry into exactly what happened.

"Foreign powers may see it in their interests for Britain to be outside a weakened EU. If it turns out the referendum process could have been undermined to reach an outcome that is not in our best interests then this is a major international scandal."
