There will be a 'snap' general election on the 8 June so please watch this space for more details of our candidate, Ed Reynolds, and the Lib Dem campaign. Any help will be very gratefully accepted (see our Contact List or use libdemsec@aol.com). All local members will be sent more info by email.

Only the Liberal Democrats can help the country to avoid disaster now.

In a statement Nick Clegg said: "Theresa May has called a General Election out of opportunism and intolerance: opportunism in seeking to exploit the weakness of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour party; and intolerance in seeking a landslide majority to bring about 'unity', by which she means the ability to impose whatever interpretation of Brexit she wishes without meaningful scrutiny from Parliament.

"Meanwhile, her Brexit-obsessed Government is failing to provide the decent schools, hospitals and social care which communities [...] rightly deserve.

"This General Election once again places the interests of the Conservative Party ahead of the daily needs of the British people."

In other news, the President of the European Parliament has said Britain would be welcomed back with open arms if voters changed their minds about Brexit on 8 June. This directly contradicts Theresa May's claim that 'there is no turning back' after Article 50.

Liberal Democrat Leader Tim Farron said: "This shows it's not too late to prevent a divisive, hard Brexit. On 8th June, together we can change the direction of this country. The Liberal Democrats will be the real voice of opposition to this Conservative Brexit government."
