Elections like buses…??

Anita DayDear Friend,

Sorry that I haven't written for a couple of weeks, although you've probably guessed the reasons why, given events of the last 10 days.

There we were… in the midst of the County Council Election campaigns, getting on with delivering leaflets, canvassing etc ….and then Theresa May dropped her bombshell!

There had been a rumour in political circles for about a month that this would happen. We reasoned that she was too opportunistic not to seize the moment when Jeremy Corbyn's popularity seemed at an all-time low. We had also heard that she was becoming increasingly anxious about the revival of the Lib Dems, well aware of our massive increase in members and our large number of local government gains since last June, including in Leave-voting areas. She could not risk allowing us to become even stronger.

Interestingly, it did not escape many commentators' notice that her stated justification - to strengthen her bargaining position in the Brexit negotiations - sounded hollow, especially as she had to break her word, force Labour to support the vote despite the Fixed Term Parliament Act (by daring them to vote against it), and incur around £150 million in admin costs at a time when we could have easily used that money on the NHS! But here we are. You wait ages for one election, and then two come along at once!

Whilst we would not have chosen to contest a General Election a month after the County Council elections, it has not been all bad. In the last 10 days, we have gained over 13,000 new members nationally- meaning that 50,000 people have now joined us since last June. If you have joined us in recent weeks, welcome!

We had also begun preparations, so we could get off to a fast start. I can therefore confirm that I will be submitting my nomination as the Lib Dem candidate for Grantham & Stamford (G&S) as soon as the County Council elections are over. An announcement regarding our candidate in South Holland & The Deepings (SHTD) will be made shortly.

I apologise in advance if I can't write to you on a weekly basis for the next few weeks. I will do my best, but there is an awful lot of do. And we will need your help:

We do not have the financial reserves of the Tories, so need funds so that we can compete against them on equal terms. If you feel able to make a donation to our battle fund, however small, please get in touch with me.

We also need people on the ground to help with local campaigning. Please email me if you are able to help. Details on the strategy in SHTD will follow very soon.

Has Theresa May miscalculated? Hard to say, but this will certainly be an election like no other!

Take care, and speak soon

Anita
