Vision for a Liberal Britain

March 9, 2018 5:04 PM
Your Liberal Britain
Six months ago, we launched your Vision for a Liberal Britain - a statement of the Lib Dem aim to reshape this country.

That vision was based on the ideas of 7,000 Lib Dems, and made with the help of 400 more - not to mention the 1,000 members who organised and attended discussion events up and down the country.

Now I have good news for you. At Spring Conference in Southport this weekend the party will be debating a new, official strategy. And look, your vision statement is front and centre! Here's how the strategy starts:

"Our aim is to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.

"Our ambition for our country and the wider world is set out in further detail in the Vision for a Liberal Britain drawn from thousands of party members over the last two years, the paper on party philosophy, It's About Freedom, and the policy overview paper The Opportunity to Succeed, the Power to Change (2016). Now we need a strategy to deliver that vision."

You know what's even better? The party included your vision statement of their own accord. We had nothing to do with this strategy. This is the party listening to you and taking on board what you had to say. We didn't need to convince them: they included this because they liked what you did.

So if you were one of the 8,000 or so people who helped out in one way or another, you should feel proud. Since most of you won't be coming to Conference, we'll write again on Sunday to let you know how the debate goes!

We're also happy to announce that we have developed with Vince Cable's approval an updated version of the Vision Statement that now, by popular demand, includes protecting and preserving our environment as a sixth goal. (The new version also clears up some, ahem, deliberate typos...)

Here in the Your Liberal Britain team, we're excited to see our very first project reach its conclusion at a time when we're now launching more new initiatives than ever before. From the Ashdown Prize for Radical Thought to our volunteer teams helping to stop Brexit, we've got heaps of new opportunities for you.

If you are coming to Conference, come to our events to get involved:

1. Together with Lib Dems for Electoral Reform we're running a session challenging you to reinvent how we talk about Proportional Representation and the electoral system. Come to the Promenade Room in the Ramada Plaza for 13:00 on Saturday.

2. Later that same day, we'll be running our popular new event, a Policy Brainstorm. With more than 20 planned around the country, these events help you devise bold new ideas to grab voters attention and encapsulate our vision. We'll be in the Executive Lounge of the Ramada Plaza at 19:45 on Saturday.

Failing all that, come say hi at our stall in the Exhibition. We'd love to meet you.

All the best,

Jim Williams
Founder, Your Liberal Britain

PS Are you feeling welcomed enough yet? You probably spotted that we accidentally sent the welcome email that goes to every new member of this list to *every member of this list* the other day. As it turns out though, it led loads of you to explore our Get Involved page. So: you're welcome! ;)
Your Liberal Britain is a grassroots initiative helping the Liberal Democrats reinvent themselves as a bold political movement that no-one can ignore.
